The stomach has hydrochloric acid that helps with digestion. However, this acid has strong acidity – pH level of 2 to 3, which is strong enough to dissolve steel. The stomach lining produces an alkaline bicarbonate solution to protect itself from this acidity. Also, the lining gets replaced after every four days.
At birth, a human infant has approximately 300 bones. These bones provide extra flexibility to help the infant go through the bath canal. The extra bones also promote accelerated growth. As the baby grows, the extra bones fuse with others, leaving the 206 bones in the adult human skeleton.
Polar bears are indigenous to the Arctic Circle. They have adapted to the extreme cold temperatures by becoming experts in heat conservation. They lose so little heat that they can become undetectable by thermal cameras.
Acceleration, measured in g’s, is the change in speed over time. Fleas have an acceleration of 100 g; they can leap three inches (eight centimeters) in one millisecond. In comparison, a Space Shuttle’s peak acceleration is 5 g.
Nothing travels faster than light. It travels at 186,000 miles (300,000 km) per second. But the sun is more than 93 million miles (150 odd km) from the earth. So, it still takes a considerable amount of time for light from the sun to reach earth. For comparison, light from the sun reaches Puto, the furthest planet in our solar system, in 5.5 hours.
All planets have a common origin and revolve around the sun, which is at the center. All rotate in the same direction except got Venus and Uranus. Space explorers claim that Venus spins clockwise, while Uranus spins on its side. Scientists have speculated these two planets have spinning peculiarities probably because of colliding with giant asteroids.
The earth’s crust is divided into tectonic plates, which are in constant motion. Hawaii, which is right in the middle of the Pacific plate, is gradually drifting north-west towards the North American plate. The speed at which the Pacific plate is moving north-west is almost the same pace at which fingernails grow.
All living organisms require oxygen to survive. However, during the day, plants use carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and give out oxygen. The Amazon forest is 2.1 million square miles of mostly plants. It accounts for about 20 percent of the oxygen in the earth’s atmosphere.
As time goes by, the sun becomes brighter and hotter because of the depletion of the ozone layer. Scientists predict that in about 2 billion years, the earth will be too hot to be habitable. Eventually, the sun will scorch the earth, and the planet will cease to exist.
